Nearly all of the children who need families live in orphanages in their home countries. Some countries utilize a foster care system as well. The children range in age from infants to older school age children. Both boys and girls are waiting for families and most have been determined to be healthy. Children with special needs are also waiting. Most often, all children come into care because of difficulties faced by their birth parents; the most common of which are poverty and legal limitations on the number of children permitted in the family. You typically select the general age, gender, and health status of the child you wish to adopt.

The Countries

There are currently three primary areas of the world in which international adoptions are occurring: Central and South America; Eastern Europe; and Asia. When selecting a country from which to adopt, it is critically important to be well educated about all the variables associated with adoptions from that country. These include, estimated costs, time frames, program stability, ages and numbers of children needing families, travel requirements, the adoption process itself, post placement requirements, risks and uncertainties, and parent eligibility requirements. Our detailed program descriptions contained elsewhere in this guide outline the specific requirements for adoption from China.  Please click here for information to guide you in choosing a country that will be right for your family.

Length of Process

In general, it takes approximately 12 to 36 months to complete a typical international adoption. Please view our program descriptions for the most current information regarding time frames.

Travel

Nearly all countries that you may be considering will require travel on one or more trips to your child’s country to meet him or her and complete the processing of your adoption. A visit to your child’s country as you begin your life together can be an invaluable part of your adoption process. To experience and learn about your child’s country of birth, its people and its customs will give you a special gift to later share with your child. Our programs from Asia require trips that range in length of between 10 and 12 days in-country. La Vida will fully plan your trip, make your international and in-country flight arrangements, arrange for meals and site seeing, and provide staff, guides, translators, facilitators and travel representatives who will fully guide you through your entire international adoption trip from start to finish.

WHY FAMILIES CHOOSE INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION

For a variety of excellent reasons, today more and more couples and singles are choosing to build their family through international adoption. Most importantly, there are countless children around the world who are in need of a home and caring and loving adoptive parents. Secondly, international adoption generally involves a relatively well-defined series of steps, time frames, and costs that make the process more predictable and thus attractive to many adoptive parents. Typically, in an international adoption, the legal termination of parental rights occurs prior to a child’s placement, thus eliminating the risk of disrupted adoptions and many of the other risks and uncertainties that often accompany domestic adoptions. Finally, while every type of adoption offers challenges, many families find international adoption to be a more emotionally manageable process. It is typically free from unpredictable costs, unpredictable time frames, and free from the emotional ups and downs often associated with completing a domestic adoption.

Once you begin exploring international adoption, you will quickly realize that there are thousands and thousands of families who have successfully completed international adoptions. For most of these families, it has been a great experience that has brought joy into their lives and given a child a second chance.
