Earthquake Relief; Orphanage Assistance
& Humanitarian Aid
On Monday, May 12th a devastating earthquake hit China and early estimates are that
many thousands are dead, missing, or injured. We have received many calls from
families expressing a desire to assist orphanages and children in need as a
result of the recent earthquake that has primarily affected Sichuan Province & Chongqing
Municipality.
Over the years, La Vida families have received many children from
orphanages in these areas. We have
also received many inquiries about the safety of our in-country guides and we
are happy to report that none of the individuals who assist La Vida families
during travel were harmed.
Due to the severity of the earthquake and the large areas of the country that
have been affected, the communication system in many parts of China is still
being repaired and damage information still being gathered.
During this time, we have been able to ascertain that Fuling Social
Welfare Institute (in Chongqing Municipality)
has experienced building damage, but no loss of life or serious injury.
Please see the below information regarding the ongoing project we have
with this orphanage We will be
communicating with orphanages and officials as soon as possible and hope to have
more detailed and specific information shortly.
In the mean time, we are happy to accept contributions that will be used
for reconstruction projects, emergency assistance and other necessities. If you
are interested in donating to this fund, please send a check or you may
download a credit card authorization form. You may mail it to us or
fax it to 610-688-8028.
Additionally, as many of you know, La Vida has undertaken a very significant
project in the city of Fuling, near the epicenter
of the earthquake, for the construction of a specialized rehabilitation center
and medical clinic for children with special needs throughout all of Chongqing Municipality.
This center will provide children with special medical needs an
opportunity for the kind of rehabilitation, special care, and treatment that is
not currently available in most orphanages.
While over $130,000 has already been contributed to this project, a
significant amount of additional funding is necessary to complete the project
and open the center. Please visit
our humanitarian aid page to learn more
about the project and to view the most recent progress report.
Please remember that all contributions are fully tax deductible and any size
donation is sincerely appreciated.
