June 24, 2003
Today the China Center of Adoption Affairs (CCAA)
announced the lifting of the temporary suspension on certain travel
related adoption activities previously announced on May 15,
2003. For a little over one month, CCAA temporarily held the
issuance of child assignments
and travel permission documents for families adopting from China.
During this period of time all other adoption activities continued uninterrupted.
The
decision to postpone certain travel activities in May was not
permanent and was a result of the
Chinese government’s efforts to control the spread of
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The Chinese government
has worked diligently to contain SARS and appears to have been very
successful. Also today, the World Health Organization lifted its
prior recommendation that non essential travel to China be
postponed.
It is important to understand that during the approximate one month
suspension of certain activities, the Chinese government still
accepted new applications for the adoption of children and the
processing of adoptions still continued.
The China international adoption program has been one of
the most consistent adoption programs worldwide ever since the country
began processing adoptions in 1992. There continues to be a tremendous
need for families to adopt children from China.
